چکیده

At the request of the U.S. Army Project Manager for Non-Stockpile Chemical Materiel, Sandia National Laboratories is developing a transportable system for destroying recovered, explosively configured, chemical warfare munitions. The system uses shaped charges to access the chemical agent and burster followed by chemical neutralization to destroy them. The entire process takes place inside a sealed pressure vessel. In this paper, we review the design, operation, and testing of a prototype system capable of containing up to one pound of explosive.

Supercritical water oxidation for the destruction of toxic organic wastewaters: a review.

The destruction of toxic organic wastewaters from munitions demilitarization and complex industrial chemical clearly becomes an overwhelming problem if left to conventional treatment processes. Two options, incineration and supercritical water oxidation (SCWO), exist for the complete destruction of toxic organic wastewaters. Incinerator has associated problems such as very high cost and public ...

Applied Geophysics and the Detection of Buried Munitions

Buried military munitions, such as bombs, artillery projectiles, rockets and landmines can present serious safety hazards. Geophysical investigations are often used to detect such munitions so that they can be safely recovered and destroyed. However, different geophysical methods each have particular capabilities and limitations. Magnetometers and gradiometers are well suited to detecting ferro...

Exposures to Discarded Sulfur Mustard Munitions — Mid-Atlantic and New England States 2004–2012

Before the 1970s, the United States sometimes disposed of at sea excess, obsolete, or unserviceable munitions, including chemical munitions. Chemical munitions known to have been disposed of at sea included munitions filled with sulfur mustard, a vesicant (i.e., an agent that causes chemical burns or blisters of the skin and mucous membranes). Signs and symptoms of exposure to a mustard agent c...

Ecological Considerations of Depleted Uranium Munitions

Ecological consequences of depleted uranium (DU) released to the environment as a result of military use of DU munitions were appraised by reviewing pertinent literature. Estimates were based upon ecosystem responses to natural uranium, which is more soluble and more toxic than DU. It was concluded that the major ecological hazard from expended uranium munitions will be chemical toxicity rather...

Toxicity of the Organophosphate Chemical Warfare Agents GA, GB, and VX: Implications for Public Protection.

The nerve agents, GA, GB, and VX are organophosphorus esters that form a major portion of the total agent volume contained in the U.S. stockpile of unitary chemical munitions. Congress has mandated the destruction of these agents, which is currently slated for completion in 2004. The acute, chronic, and delayed toxicity of these agents is reviewed in this analysis. The largely negative results ...
